Downtown TTC relief line needed soon: study

TORONTO, Ont. – The Downtown Rapid Transit Expansion Study has warned Yonge subway cars could be jam-packed with passengers by 2031 unless something is done.

The TTC is looking at a downtown relief subway line to deal with projections showing the number of people living south of College Street, between Bathurst and Parliament streets, will nearly double.

The downtown relief line would run south from Pape station, west along King to St. Andrew station.

A second phase of the plan would include an expansion west to Roncesvalles Avenue and then north to the Bloor subway.

The estimated cost would $6-billion, and the project is expected to discussed at the commission’s next meeting on Wednesday.
