MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – As the City of Mississauga works to balance the budget, residents can expect to pay more user fees.

On Thursday, council approved preliminary user fees that will still have to be finalized in the spring budget.

For example, if approved, the price of a monthly aquatic centre pass will rise 33 per cent, from $15 to $20 in 2013.

The Toronto Star reported a motion put forward by Mayor Hazel McCallion to make accident victims pay for fire and emergency services did not pass.

McCallion warns without higher user fees, residents will face another tax hike.

The new user fees would offset the city’s $1.5-billion deficit by around $500,000.
