MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – A 66-year-old construction worker is dead after being crushed between a backhoe and the foundation of a home in Mississauga.
Peel police Const. Fiona Thivierge said the man was in a three-metre-deep ditch around the foundation of the home when the incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded to the residence on Camilla Road near Hurontario Street and the Queen Elizabeth Way.
“It has been a rescue mission up until he was pronounced (dead),” Thivierge said.
Police said the contractor had been working on the home’s foundation when a backhoe fell in and pinned him to the house.
“Immediate attempts were made by the fire department and the ambulance crew and the police to try and rescue this individual. However, those attempts were unsuccessful,” Sgt. Peter Brandwood said.
The man’s name has not been released.
An investigation by the Ministry of Labour is underway.
