The teenager accused in the death of York Regional Police Const. Garrett Styles will stand trial on a charge of manslaughter rather than first-degree murder, his lawyer confirmed to 680News.

Lawyer David Berg said an Ontario judge ordered the youth, initially charged with first-degree murder, to stand trial on manslaughter.

According to the judge, evidence at the preliminary hearing is sufficient only to support a charge of manslaughter.

No date is set for the trial.

Const. Styles died in June 2011 while conducting a traffic stop. The accused, who was driving his parents’ vehicle without a licence, allegedly tried to speed away from the stop on Hwy. 48, when the van crushed Const. Styles.

He died on the way to the hospital, while the accused was left paralyzed.
