The Alberta processing plant at the centre of a massive beef recall has announced the temporary layoff of approximately 2,000 workers.
The XL Foods plant in Brooks, Alberta, has been idle since September 27 because of an apparent E. coli contamination problem.
Brooks Mayor Martin Shields says the layoffs are a tough blow to the town, but he remains hopeful the pain will only be short lived.
“We’re at the brink but you take a deep breath and say okay, temporary means that we’ve got some people that are in a stressful situation but hopefully that is short term and the plant is back in operation as soon as possible,” Shields said.
At this point there has been no indication when the XL Plant will be able to return to business-as-usual.
Mayor Shields added that is main concern right now is ensuring the laid-off workers start receiving employment insurance benefits as soon as possible.
