ONTARIO – To mark the importance of fire prevention, Hydro One wants to remind people to takes action to prevent electrical fires. Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 7 to Oct 13 this year and electrical fires top the list of causes for house fires in Canada.
Hydro One has the following tips on how to make sure your home is safe:
-Keep electrical cords away from heat and water because both can damage insulation and create a shock hazard.
-Put safety caps on any unused electrical outlets
-Inspect cords and plugs. Replace any cords that have been cut, broken or have cracked insulation.
-Avoid clusters of wires and plugs in your outlets.
-Buy appliances approved by the Canadian Standards Association and always disconnect small appliances before cleaning them.
-If you’re renovating, all electrical work must be inspected and approved by the Electrical Safety Authority.
-If you’re renovating, have a qualified electrician look at your electrical supply, panel and wiring.
-If you are in the market for a new home, an electrical inspection is a good idea.
