Ontario Provincial Police shut down a section of Highway 11 north of Barrie Tuesday evening, after a car crashed into an abandoned motel, causing a natural gas leak.

The Barrie Examiner reported that the vehicle drove off the southbound lanes of Highway 11 around 6:30 p.m., smashing through the side wall of the motel in Gasoline Alley. The impact caused the building’s roof to collapse and a gas line to rupture.

Crews closed down Highway 11 between Highway 93 and Line 3 and nearby businesses were evacuated. Police were told to keep their cell phones off as a precaution. Motorists were directed to alternate routes and the public was told to stay away from the area.

Police did not release any details on the condition of the driver.

The car remains stuck in the motel as police investigate and Enbridge officials tend to the area. The gas supply to the building has been cut off.
