It’s Thanksgiving, and even though most things are closed, the Butterball turkey talk-line is open for all your tough bird questions.

There is no turkey emergency too big or too small for the turkey experts at Butterball, who say they have heard just about everything.

“No fear, we have been able to handle all the problems, and given them a few tips along the way,” said Carol Miller of the turkey talk-line.

One of the most common questions they get, is what to do with a frozen bird. While the ideal is to thaw it in the refrigerator, you can also thaw it in cold water, making sure to change the water every thirty minutes.

They recommend cold-water thawing time to be thirty minutes for each pound for a full turkey. Make sure to not thaw the turkey at room temperature as that could promote bacterial growth.

If you’re dealing with a busy oven and not enough space, Miller has the following advice.

“I always recommend that they get the turkey out of the oven about an hour ahead of time, cover it with foil, put some bath towels on it and it will stay happy, and safe and hot,” Miller said.
