PBS is cashing in on this week’s U.S. presidential debate.

Since Republican nominee Mitt Romney said he would cut federal subsidies to the public broadcasting system, tens of thousands of people have gone online trying to save Big Bird’s job.

On the network’s Facebook page, PBS is directing people to their website.

Almost a quarter million people have logged on since Thursday.

On Twitter, there’s a parody account @firedbigbird showing Big Bird waiting in a depression-era bread line with the caption “this is now my life.” The account has over 30,000 followers.
