TORONTO – The Ontario Ministry of Labour has laid charges against two companies in the death of a construction worker last year in a drilling rig collapse near York University in Toronto.
OHL-FCC GP Canada Inc. and Advanced Construction Techniques Inc. each face four charges under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act alleging failure to protect the health and safety of workers at the project site.
The charges range from failing to design an adequate work platform for the drill rig to failing to ensure proper safety measures and procedures were being followed.
A 25-year-old man was killed and five others were injured at the site of a future subway station when a drilling rig toppled on Oct. 11, 2011.
Emergency crews had to work for hours on unstable ground to free the trapped workers and the dead worker’s body could not be removed from the site until the day after the collapse.
Representatives for the companies are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 1.
