TORONTO, Ont. – An early-morning fire ravaged an abandoned building near Jarvis and Dundas streets, Thursday.

Crews were called to the scene at 301 George St., at around 4:30 a.m. The fire escalated from third-alarm to fourth-alarm status at around 6:15 a.m.

Flames broke through the roof and spread to a neighbouring building. Fire officials then evacuated some nearby buildings.

Firefighters put out the fire just before 8:30 a.m.

Two cats were rescued from the building and given some oxygen at the scene. No others injuries were reported.

It is the third abandoned building in the strip to go up in flames in the past year. All three were frequented by squatters, and are owned by the same landlord.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
