PICKERING – The body found in Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering on Sunday is that of missing Ajax teen Mitchell Somerville, Durham Regional Police have confirmed.
Police have labelled the incident a death by misadventure.
Somerville, 17, had been missing since Sept. 21 until Sunday when police pulled his body from near the shoreline.
“Rest In Peace Mitch! My family and I would like to thank everyone for all your efforts and supports,” Somerville’s family wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“Unfortunately at 1pm this afternoon Mitch was found in Frenchman’s Bay. The family requests privacy at this time as we mourn our loss of such an amazing young man.”

The body was recovered near where Somerville’s knapsack was discovered.
Police do not suspect foul play
Further toxicology tests have been ordered.
