TORONTO, Ont. – The debate over plastic bags in the City of Toronto may not be over just yet.
The final bylaw banning retailers from offering plastic bags is expected to be before council on Wednesday, and some councillors are calling for the bylaw to be rescinded.
Councillor Peter Milczyn wants to reopen the bag debate and possibly rescind the ban bylaw.
He said a report by the city solicitor suggests the bylaw may not stand up in court.
“I don’t see how anybody in their right mind can impose a bag ban Jan. 1, legally or even in terms of the logistics of it,” Milcyzn said.
Councillor Gord Perks, who supports the ban, said some on council tend to give in easy under pressure.
“Unfortunately, there’s been a heavy lobby from the supermarket industry and some of the plastics firms, and some of my councillor colleagues are getting cold feet,” Perks said.
A Forum Research poll found 45 per cent of people in Toronto approve of a plastic bag ban, while 50 per cent disapprove and five per cent undecided.
