TORONTO, Ont. – Two men who have been in custody for months on gun charges appeared in court Tuesday morning to face charges of murder.
The case involved Anthony Spencer, 23, a father and aspiring musician, who was shot to death at close range around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 21 at a studio on Brimley Road near Lawrence Avenue.
A group of people loaded him into a car, left him at Scarborough General Hospital and took off. He later died in hospital.
In the weeks after the shooting, police released security images of the five men carrying Spencer out of the studio and putting him in a car.
Police also released security footage of a young woman, described as a person of interest, caught on camera walking in and out of the studio just before shooting.
Two men were arrested in the case on unrelated offences 10 days after the murder. Police have linked Spencer’s murder to three drive-by shootings in Malvern last January.
Police said robbery was involved.
Police have charged Samuel Paul with first-degree murder and armed robbery. They’ve also charged Chever Ashley with accessory-after-the-fact to murder and robbery with a firearm.
