There have been a lot of jokes at Rory McIlroy’s expense, who almost missed his tee time and needed a police escort but Europe still pulled off an epic Ryder Cup win.

The 23-year-old’s European team-mates made fun of him for catching a ride in a police car after getting confused about the time zone and arriving at Medinah with 10 minutes to spare before his 11:25 a.m. tee time.

“I’ve never been so worried going to the golf course,” McIlroy said. Luckily, there was a state trooper outside the lobby of the hotel that took me there. I was just like, ‘get me there, get me there.’”

After leading, the U.S. was pushed aside by Europe. This is being called the greatest comeback in the tournament’s history, with Europe rallying from a four-point deficit.

Martin Kaymer’s six-foot putt clinched the crucial 14th point in a one-up victory over Steve Stricker, which was a stunning upset that robbed the U.S. of its third Ryder Cup since 1999.

“Miracle at Medinah” is how Europe’s improbable Ryder Cup victory is being described.
