Canadian citizen Omar Khadr has landed in Canada and been transferred to Millhaven Institution, after leaving Guantanamo Bay to serve the remainder of his sentence.
The 26-year-old had been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay where he is serving an 8-year sentence for war crimes, including the death of an American soldier.
Khadr was taken by a Canadian Corrections van to Millhaven Institution, a maximum-security prison located near Kingston.
The battle to bring Khadr back to Canada has been going on for years.
The Canadian-born Khadr, whose family is originally from Egypt, first came into the spotlight nearly 10 years ago when, at 15-years-old, he was captured in Afghanistan after a battle with U.S. forces in which one soldier was killed.
He is serving an 8-year sentence after pleading guilty to five crimes, including the death of the soldier.
CBC initially reported that a military plane with Khadr on-board left the U.S. naval base on Cuba’s southeast shore around 4:30 a.m.
His family reportedly has ties to al-Qaeda and there are reports they spent time living in Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.
