TORONTO, Ont. – In the wake of a string of sexual assaults near and on campus at Ryerson University, its student union held a second closed-door emergency meeting on Thursday.

The first meeting was held on Wednesday.

Toronto Police said five cases were reported to them and campus security — with four currently being investigated and one deemed “unfounded” since the first week of September.

The series of assaults have troubled students.

“We’ve been getting emails constantly saying more sexual assaults have been happening,” one woman told CityNews on Wednesday. “So, obviously, feel kind of uneasy walking around campus at night,” she said.

Investigators said there are multiple suspects and it is unclear whether they are students at the university.

Police urged other victims to report the incident to police.

In one instance, a woman was followed into a washroom.

A Ryerson Students Union’ spokesperson told CityNews on Wednesday that she does not think that there has been an increase in assaults on campus.

“We believe there is an increase in reporting of them, which in of itself is a good thing.”

“It means that folks feel comfortable talking about it and coming out and saying the things that have been happening.”

The RSU said the emergency meetings strive to encourage discussion.

“We want to continue that discussion and to continue to break down that culture of shame and culture of silence that so often surrounds sexual assault.”

Students were invited to submit concerns in an RSU survey.
