Legendary singer Andy Williams — known for his signature song “Moon River” — has died at age 84.
His publicist, Paul Shefrin, said he died at his home in Branson, MO, Missouri after a year-long battle with bladder cancer.
In Nov. 2011, Williams he said was diagnosed with cancer but planned to continue performing.
Williams’ voice was as smooth as silk, and many of his friends, including Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis, described him as one of the nicest people anyone could ever meet.
He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, IA, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began his singing career performing in the church choir.
After landing a regular spot on Steve Allen’s “Tonight Show,” Williams began his solo career and received his first No. 1 single, “Butterfly” in 1957. He went on to record 18 gold and three platinum albums.
He went on to host his own television show, “The Andy Williams Show,” from 1962 to 1971, and was also known for his Christmas specials, where he performed with the Osmonds, Diana Ross and Sinatra.
The Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad, “Moon River,” was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Mancini thought it was ideal for Williams, who recorded it in one take, and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards.
Although “Moon River” was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand.

Williams also sang “Canadian Sunset,” “Lips of Wine,” “Dear Heart” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” among others.
Williams is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian.
