TORONTO, Ont. – The proposal of a queer-centric high school in Toronto was put on hold Wednesday, following a public forum that drew mixed reaction.
The meeting, organized by Fan Wu, a former Toronto District School Board student trustee and University of Toronto student, was held to measure community interest in the proposal before a formal pitch is submitted to the Toronto District School Board. However, there was no consensus on whether the proposal should move forward.
According to a Toronto Star report, the gay-centric high school would be open to all students, and the board said it is open to proposals for alternative schools in the city.
Currently, the TDSB facilitates the Triangle Program for LGBT students at the Oasis Alternative Secondary School near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street, which focuses on gay literature, history and current events.
Reaction to a queer-centric school is mixed.
Some said the focus should be on integration versus separation.
“Let’s have peace and civility in our society,” Canada Christian College president Charles McVety told CityNews.
“Let’s not have special people that get millions of dollars for their special program,” he said.
But a queer activist said it is a step toward the right direction.
“There are kids who are in very risky, dangerous situations who need a safer place to go,” she told CityNews.
“I think the notion of having a school where these kids can be safe is a good step in the right direction.”
