TORONTO, Ont. – Light-heavyweight champ Jon ‘Bones’ Jones showed why he is considered one of the greatest fighters in the world Saturday, submitting former champ Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort in the fourth round.
UFC 152 rocked the ACC Saturday night, with several impressive fights giving the crowd the show they had been waiting for.
Belfort put up an admirable fight again Jones, who generally uses his long reach and unorthodox style to beat his opponents.
After nearly submitting Jones in the first round, Belfort was struck by vicious elbows from Jones that left his face cut and bloody.
In the co-main event, Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson became the UFC’s first flyweight (125-pound) champion after winning a split decision over Joseph Benavidez.
On the undercard, several Canadian fighters put up great performances, finishing 3-1 on the night.
Welterweight Sean ‘The Punisher’ Pierson of Pickering, lightweight T.J. Grant of Nova Scotia and bantamweight Mitch Gangon of Sudbury all picked up wins.
Halifax light-heavyweight Roger ‘The Hulk’ Hollett lost his UFC debut to Matt ‘The Hammer’ Hamill.
Although there were many empty seats when the undercard began, when the main even started at 10 p.m. there were approximately 16,800 filling the arena.
English middleweight Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping showed his all-around fight skills beating American Brian Stann in a unanimous decision.
The card was the 10th time UFC has come to Canada and the third time it has been in Toronto. In November the UFC will return to Montreal for UFC 154.
