A fare hike effective Jan. 1 was approved by York Regional Council on Thursday.
The council approved a fare increase to offset the service’s rising operating costs and to accommodate its growing ridership expected to reach 22.5 million riders in the new year.
The overall increase will affect all YRT/Viva fares except the GTA Weekly Pass.
It will see its one-zone and two-zone cash fares jump by 25-cents to $3.75 and $4.75, respectively.
One-zone adult, student and senior/child monthly passes will also increase by five dollars. Two-zone adult and student monthly passes will increase to $165 and $135, respectively. However, two-zone senior/child monthly passes will increase by three dollars to $85.
All ticket booklets will increase by $2.
