TORONTO, Ont. – Starting next weekend, there will be a cheaper way for Toronto pet owners to keep track of their dogs and cats.

Starting Sept. 22, Toronto Animal Services will be going on the road — driving a truck around the city to perform microchip implants. List of locations here.

The chip is the size of a grain of rice and is usually implanted just under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. If your pet escapes without its collar and tags, a simple scan of the computer chip will help to get them back.

For owners who have a pet licence from the city, it will cost them $5 to get the chip implanted.

For those without a licence, the computer chips will cost $20 for cats and $30 for dogs, which is still cheaper than having the implant done at the vet.
