TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police have amplified their presence in a west-end neighbourhood after a string of break-ins and sexual assaults that occurred early Tuesday morning with homeowners present.
In the wake of the alarming spate of break-ins, police have created a hotline at 416-808-2280, specifically for the investigation. They have also produced a YouTube video with tips for crime prevention at home.
Between Sept. 21 and Sept. 23, police will continue a canvass of the neighbourhood and speak with area residents.
Police said six homes were targeted between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the area bordered by Bloor Street West, Islington Avenue, The Queensway and the Humber River on Sept.18.
In some instances, residents were sexually assaulted, including a 91-year-old woman who called police with her medical alert system after she was allegedly groped. None of the victims were hospitalized.
“Who thinks they can walk in and invade somebody else’s — not only the personal space in terms of the house — but to walk right up to you and touch you,” a victim told CityNews in an exclusive interview.
She said she more angered by the incident, than traumatized.
Police are seeking a male described as 6-foot with a slim build.
“We consider him to be a very very serious offender,” police said. “We want him off the street as quickly as possible.”
Const. Tony Vella told 680News it is unclear whether the incidents are related to a series of sexual assaults involving senior citizens in the area earlier this month.
“The forensics team is going through the immediate area, combing through, looking for forensic evidence that can lead us to the suspect or suspects in this case.”
Police are urging residents in the area to inspect their property for any signs of an attempted entry and to ensure their homes are locked before going to bed.
“We’re not trying to create a panic here,” police said.
“All we’re trying to do is make sure that people are safe.”
