OTTAWA – Canadian military personnel rang up $11 million in hotel bills during last year’s mission in Libya.

The $11 million price tag for accommodation is a little more than 10 per cent of the total cost of the mission pegged at $104 million.

The opposition believed pilots and their crews were staying at an Italian military outpost but they were in actuality at hotels on the island of Sicily.

“When you think of a military mission, you think of pilots and crew living on base,” Liberal MP John McKay said.

“You think of fairly Spartan conditions,” he said, adding that ringing up a little over 10 per cent of the mission cost “raises questions.”

According to the CBC, the military considered renting a cruise ship but scrapped the idea.

The NDP said hotels for pilots and crews are standard practice but is not impressed with the Tories hiding the price tag.

The party said Canadians should learn about military costs from the government, not the media.
