Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer and had his right leg amputated above the knee when he was 18 years old.
In 1980, he set out to run across Canada to raise hope and money for research of the disease.
He ran on a prosthetic leg for 143 days, but had to conclude his journey just outside of Thunder Bay, Ont., when the cancer spread to his lungs.
Fox died at the age of 22.
