Stephen Harper’s government will no longer fight international efforts to list asbestos as a dangerous substance.
Ottawa has pledged to spend $50 million to help Canada’s last asbestos mining region in Quebec to diversify its economy.
As recently as 2010, that region produced 150,000 tonnes of asbestos, which is known to cause cancer.
At least ninety per cent of the product was exported, mostly to developing countries.
