OTTAWA – Federal government jobs appear to be on the chopping block, as nearly 2,000 civil servants received notices on Thursday.

People working at Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Service Canada received notices suggesting that their jobs could be slashed.

The unions representing the civil servants warn that job cuts could hamper public services.

“As we lose public service workers, inevitably, we are losing public services and our ability to provide them,” Don Rogers of the Public Service Alliance told 680News.

The Conservatives said the cuts are to eliminate duplicate positions and will not affect frontline services.

Rogers added that the feds have no ruled out further cuts in next’s year budget but the latest round of potential cuts would be the final wave for this year.
