ONTARIO – The province has had the worst year for the West Nile virus since 2002, according to a weekly report from Public Health Ontario.
The report said the province’s case count rose another 36 per cent last week, to 158 confirmed and probable cases as of Sept. 8.
In 2002, the first year West Nile virus cases were reported in Canada, there were 394 human cases.
Nearly one-third of this year’s Ontario cases were in Toronto.
Four other provinces have reported West Nile cases this year.
Saskatchewan reported two, Alberta reported five, Quebec reported 20 and Manitoba reported 29 cases.
So far, there have been no reported deaths as a result of the illness in Canada.
