TORONTO, Ont. – Outsourced garbage pickup in the city’s west-end is spurring an onslaught of complaints from residents, a city councillor said on Wednesday.

A report prepared by Coun. Gord Perks revealed complaints to the city’s 311 service about private contractor Green For Life Environmental Corp. have doubled, and even tripled, in recent months in the affected wards.

“Every single ward has seen a dramatic increase in the number of calls to 311 about missed pickups, inadequate service,” he said.

Waste collection in 17 wards west of Yonge Street, known as District 2, was privatized last month.

Perks said trash pickup is even worse in his ward Parkdale-High Park.

“In my ward, I’ve seen 10 times as many complaints about the quality of the operator as I had last year,” he said.

The public works committee rejected an attempt by Perks to discuss the matter at Wednesday’s meeting.
