BRAMPTON, Ont. – A 17-year-old Brampton teenager who collapsed during a high school football game has died.
Gene Odulio, 17, a Grade 12 student at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, was playing an exhibition game on Friday, when he suffered a serious injury.
According to a letter sent to students and parents on Monday, Odulio was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital, where he died on Sunday.
“Now that he’s gone, I won’t see that smile,” his mother told CityNews. “Whenever I have a problem, I’m just going to look at his pictures. I’m going to miss him.”
Students took to Twitter to post condolences and share thoughts about their friend.
“He was an amazing player and teammate but he will be most remembered for the good, caring guy he was off the field,” one user tweeted.
“You were a great friend with a great heart! I’ll never forget you bro!” Another user tweeted.
A memorial service was held for Odulio on Monday. Counsellors were also made available for staff and students.
