NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – A torso found in the Niagara River in August has been identified as belonging to a 30-year-old N.Y. woman, Niagara Regional Police confirmed on Friday.

DNA testing confirmed that the torso spotted on Aug. 29 was that of Loretta Gates, a mother of three children.

Gates was last seen on Aug. 25 in the area of Main Street and Niagara Avenue in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She had left her mother’s home to go to the store and never returned.

Her family reported her missing to Niagara Falls Police on Sept. 4.

Published reports say her Facebook profile shows her as the mother of three children, aged 11, five and four. Only five days before she disappeared, Gates had announced on her page that she was engaged.

Meanwhile, Niagara Regional Police recovered a partial arm and leg from the lower Niagara River, Friday around 4:00 p.m., following a tip from a fisherman Thursday evening about a possible body parts sighting.

At this time it’s not known if the body parts are Gates’. The remains have been sent to a Hamilton hospital for examination.

Niagara Falls Police, New York State Police, Niagara Regional Police and the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office are working together on the investigation.
