TORONTO, Ont. – Officials have confirmed that it was indeed a decomposed torso found Wednesday inside a suitcase floating in Lake Ontario near Bluffers Park.

As the investigation is still in early stages, the Toronto Police Homicide Unit will be treating the torso as a suspicious death investigation.

Police say they have been in touch with Peel Regional Police and Niagara Regional Police, but could not confirm or speculate if the torso was related to either the death of Guang Hua Liu or the remains found near Niagara Falls.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Thursday morning, at which point police say they will have more information to pass on.

The body was located by two boaters who had been on Lake Ontario, according to police.

“Boaters in Lake Ontario brought it to shore, and that’s when police were contacted,” Constable Tony Vella told 680News.

“When officers arrived, they examined the contents of the suitcase and it has been determined the contents are human remains.”

Saying it was a matter of evidence, police would not comment on the colour of the suitcase.

“What I can tell you is the suitcase is sufficient enough to contain that of a torso,” said Detective Les Dunkley.

Police could not yet confirm whether the torso belongs to a male or female.

The discovery was made just before 11:30 a.m.Wednesday morning.
