TORONTO, Ont. – It’s back to school day, Tuesday, and Toronto police are reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention in and around school zones.
Police launched its back-to-school safety campaign at Presteign Heights Elementary School, located at St. Clair Avenue East and O’Connor Drive.
The campaign runs until Friday, Sept. 14, and it will focus on drivers “who put children at risk due to their poor driving habits.”
Police are reminding drivers to exercise caution and obey all traffic rules in and around schools, paying special attention to children.
“People are thinking it’s ok to go a bit above the [speed] limit … zero-tolerance in school zones; you shouldn’t be travelling over 40 [kilometres an hour]. For every kilometre you go up, the chance of an injury — that possibly could turn into a fatality — increases,” Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe told 680News.
Drivers are being urged to give themselves extra time and leave early. Since there is more traffic on the roads, it could take up to 20 per cent longer to get to where they are going.
Also, motorists need to stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.
