Niagara regional police say the torso found in the Niagara River is the result of a homicide.
Although police have not revealed the cause of death, they say they believe the torso has been in the water between four to ten days.
Insp. Jim McCaffery said the woman is white, mid 20s to early 40s, with a pierced naval without jewellery, at least one cesarean section scar and has had a tubal ligation.
Police are asking for tips to help identify the woman.
“The critical point is to identify who this person is,” said Insp. McCaffery. “Someone has information which can assist in this investigation.”
Further tests are being done to assist to identify the deceased.
Police say no other body parts have been located in the water.
“Our emergency task unit, our marine unit and the Niagara Parks police high angle team have conducted a review of the immediate area and nothing has been located at this time to assist in the investigation,” said Insp. McCaffery.
He added that so far they have been unable to determine if they body originated from the Canadian or United States side of the falls.
Police also confirmed that there is no connection between this body and the murder and dismemberment of Toronto victim Guang Hua Liu.
The body was found in the Niagara River Wednesday, after being spotted by two tourists from England who also happen to be police officers. Valerie, who lives in Caledon, brought her sister Tracey and her friend Joanne Jones, a detective.
While riding on the Maid of the Mist boat tour, Jones spotted the human torso in the churning waters of the lower Niagara River.
“Our eyes were on the water, and then that’s when we saw what we believed to be body and obviously a bosom and a back,” she said.
“We were turning around headed back to the dock, and as we were turning around, the three of us sort of looked in the water, and there’s a body. We all sort of looked at each other,” Jones added.
They informed the boat’s captain, who then summoned Niagara Police.
“It was a shock obviously, and particularly for (my friends), who hadn’t seen those sort of things before.”
“Not what you expect on a vacation.”
