TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto police say four more victims have come forward in connection with a string of sex assaults in the Bloor Street West and Christie Street area.
Detective Constable Phil Campbell of the Sex Assault Unit told 680News, this brings the number of victims to eight.
He said there are two other similar assaults from July which took place in the College and Spadina area, that may be connected.
The four new victims were reportedly attacked between Aug. 16 and Aug. 28.
“The attacks have been similar, the suspect description has been similar that each individual person has provided, and the area that it’s all happened has been similar,” said Const. Campbell.
“We have all kinds of police resources still actively investigating this, including uniform, including investigators, including plainclothes officers,” he added, who said police presence in the area will be ramped up in order to catch the increasingly nervy attacker.
“Obviously the frequency we know about has risen, and we want to put a stop to it. We want to protect the public.”
Police say they believe the same person is responsible for the attacks, which have taken place in and around the Annex and Kensington Market area (although some officers say the Kensington attacks may be from a different suspect).
The attacks, to this point, have involved the suspect rushing towards the victim, and then grabbing and groping them from behind. All of them have taken place at night. Police warn they could become more violent.
Meanwhile, the longer the suspect remains on the loose and as the number of victims increase, the more worried young women are getting. At Christie and Bloor, women told 680News they have become extra cautious when going out at night.
“My friend came over to my house and was like ‘heard about everything that’s happening. Picked you up some pepper spray. Got my girlfriend some too’,” one woman said.
“I’m just much more conscientious of my surroundings,” another told 680News. “[I'm] super concerned obviously, and a little bit freaked out.”
“Scary, and I don’t want to always have to look behind my back every time I walk,” said another. “It definitely changes the way I think about going out at night by [my]self. I just want him caught.”
The suspect is described as a black male, 25-to-40-years-old, 6’0″ tall with short black hair and wearing black clothing.
The victims reportedly range in age from 16 to 27.
Police ask if there are any additional victims, that they come forward.
