Experts say the Canada Geese population is soaring to what they call a “dangerous” level.

Almost a century ago, the birds were wiped out, but stewardship efforts paid off. The population is currently described as a hazard to air travel by U.S. officials.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reports the birds smack into American planes five times more in 2012 than they did in 1990.

They say the danger stems from their size, and the way they congregate – in flocks.

Canada Geese have caused $90-million in damage to U.S. civilian aircraft over a 20-year span, according to the National Post.

Most recently, they can be blamed for the “Miracle on the Hudson” crash outside New York City in January 2009.
