ETOBICOKE, Ont.- Full power has been restored to an area of Etobicoke after a crane collapsed, Monday, taking down three hydro poles.
Police say it happened around 1:45 p.m., Monday, on Kipling Avenue, near Hinton Road.
Live hydro wires were in contact with a TTC bus, causing the passengers to be trapped inside.
Police say about 30 people were on the bus.
The driver of the bus, known by her first name, Eva, is being hailed a hero by Councillor Doug Ford and others. After seeing live wires around the bus, Eva pulled the emergency signal and forced everyone to stay on board the bus. As a result, no one on the bus was injured.
“I heard some noise and I noticed there were wires all over the bus, ” Eva told 680News, “I knew right away I was not supposed to open the door for the safety of the passengers,” she said.
Wayne Lawson, who was on the bus at the time, thinks her persistence may have prevented a tragedy.
“I think that probably saved a lot of people’s lives,” he said. “I’m sure somebody could have been electrocuted because those wires were everywhere.”
Eva said TTC bus drivers are trained for what to do when an incident like this happens.
Officials were able to safely escort the trapped passengers off the bus afterwards. The crane operator, however, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Kipling Road remains closed between Hinton Road and Rex Gate.
Constable Wendy Drummond is advising people to stay clear of the area.
People are being reminded not to touch any of the downed wires as they are considered live wires and are very dangerous.
