Animal activists take aim at Ripley’s Toronto Aquarium

TORONTO, Ont. – The Ripley’s Aquarium near the CN Tower may still be under construction, but it has already attracted attention from animal rights activists.

The Toronto Star reports that the group is upset about the capture of sand tiger sharks off the coast of South Carolina.

The sand tiger shark is a protected species in the United States, but Ripley’s was given clearance to catch them.  They say the sharks would be used for educational purposes.

The group has set up a Facebook page and is hoping to get 10-thousand people to sign an online petition against the facility.

Critics maintain using computers and live feeds from the ocean is a better and more humane way to educate children about animals.
