TORONTO, Ont. – After just three days of private garbage collection in Toronto, the city is warning it will impose a fine if Green for Life Environmental Corp. (GFL) doesn’t pick up the pace.

The city said it will begin imposing a fine of $150 for every truck that doesn’t meet its contractual deadline of completing its route by 6 p.m. Some of the trucks haven’t finished until 10 p.m.

Green for Life’s chief executive told the Toronto Star it will take them about six weeks to get up to speed, and that the city knew it would take that amount of time.

However, Jim Harnum, Toronto’s general manager of solid waste, told the Star he’ll give them four weeks leeway, but will review the situation after two weeks before demanding serious changes.

Councillor Denzil Minnan Wong, who chairs the public works and infrastructure committee and is the mayor’s point man on garbage privatization, said the company didn’t tell them that there would be start up delays.

Green for Life’s CEO Patrick Dovigi told the Star:  “The city can do what they want. I don’t make decisions for the city.”
