TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario has reached a deal with another of its teachers associations.

Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten said she has signed a memorandum of agreement with the province’s French elementary teachers.

The new agreement with AEFO, a union representing 10,000 francophone teachers, follows a two-year wage freeze deal reached with Ontario’s English Catholic teachers.

“This agreement is a powerful example of what we can accomplish when we work together,” Broten said. “Teachers and governments can enter into discussions that result in solutions, that both protect student achievement and help us meet our fiscal targets.

But school boards and teachers must still reach local agreements.

The Toronto District Catholic School Board has accepted the deal, but some boards are reportedly pushing back.

She said the deal with AEFO includes measures from the agreement reached with Catholic teachers, including three unpaid days off.

Broten and Premier Dalton McGuinty have been stepping up the pressure on the teachers’ unions and school boards to reach agreements before the end of August.

Broten said the governing Liberals are still prepared to recall the legislature this month to impose contracts on teachers if deals aren’t reached.
