TORONTO, Ont. – Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup due to an injury. He was supposed to play against Canadian Milos Raonic on Thursday night.

Last Sunday, Murray thrilled British fans by winning gold the London 2012 Olympic Games, in a game against Swiss player Roger Federer.

After flying to Toronto, Ont., on Wednesday, Murray wiped out Italy’s Flavio Cipolla in straight sets, earning the match with Roanic.

Murray and Raonic had met already this year — a 6-4 7-6 win for the latter on clay at the Barcelona Open in April.

On Tuesday, Raonic defeated Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-3, 6-4 in his first match. The Thornhill, Ont., native hammered seven aces in the match that took one hour eight minutes to play.

Raonic is the last Canadian in the Rogers Cup after Niagara Falls’ Frank Dancevic was defeated by Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-3, 7-5 in a first-round match, and Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver 7-5, 6-4.

The tournament is hoping for big things from Raonic. He will be playing at his hometown tournament for the first time since breaking into the top-25 on the ATP tour.

In a series of brilliantly funny commercials, the Rogers Cup has promoted itself as the event in which Roanic will be the star.

Roanic is ranked 23rd in the world and on centre court Tuesday night, he will play a second round match against Serbian Viktor Troicki, who comes in as the world’s 33rd best player.

Last week, Roanic advanced to the second round at the London 2012 Olympic Games and played an epic match with Joe Wilfred Tsonga, losing the third set 25-23 — the longest match in Olympic history.

The men’s tournament, which is held at Toronto’s Rexall Centre, got underway Saturday and will run until Aug. 12.

The women’s event starts on Saturday as well, and runs until Aug. 13. It’s held at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Que.

But significant names are missing from this year’s contest, from both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Roger Federer pulled out of the Rogers Cup on Aug. 3, while the day before, Rafael Nadal announced he was bowing out due to injury.

Federer dropped out before the gold medal match on Sunday against Great Britain’s Andy Murray. Murray won the gold medal, while the Swiss player won silver.

Serena Williams, who won gold at London 2012 on Saturday against Russian Maria Sharapova, won’t be participating as well.

With the tennis competitions at the Olympics scheduled to take place until Aug. 5, that means an extremely quick turnaround for some players, particularly those who advance far in the Olympic tournament.
