LONDON, England – It has been one week since the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Canada is still waiting for its first gold medal.
Many Canadians have made the trip to London to cheer on our athletes in person.
Whether they are in the stands or in a pub watching the games on TV, Canadians say they would love to witness Olympic gold.
“They athletes have done great so far, we got a couple silvers in rowing, but it would have been great to see those guys get a gold. Hopefully in the next couple of days,” one man said.
“I’m hoping they can pull it out in something, anything really. It doesn’t matter. I’d love to see a gold medal at some point,” another man said with a laugh.
“It’s a bit disappointing. We had such good results in Vancouver so I think we’ll have one coming for sure,” said Jackie from Calgary.
In the last summer Olympics, Canadian athletes failed to win a single medal in the first week of competition. They then went on to win 18 medals, including three gold medals in Beijing.
One woman from Ottawa said that is something to keep in mind.
“I love Canada and I cheer them on no matter what. I’ll still cheer for gold though.”
“Sometimes before we’ve had slow starts but I think in the end we end up coming through, really showing our true colours,” said another woman.
On Friday Canada’s women’s soccer team advanced to the semi-finals after beating Great Britain 2-0.
