TORONTO, Ont. – Whether it was days of heat or heavy rainfalls, July was an interesting month weather-wise.
CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles said Toronto saw a total of 12 days where the temperature surpassed 30 C, with four of those days passing 35 C.
It is something not normally seen in an average Toronto summer.
“Typically, in a given summer, we have one day where we top out over 35-degrees. So far this summer we have already seen four days that have been over 35 so that number is quite significant,” said Stiles.
But it was not only the heat.
The end of July saw a number of thunder storms, some of them resulting in localized flooding.
Stiles said we can blame mother nature playing catch up with rain totals.
“As far as the rain is concerned, here in July we have basically squeezed all of the month’s worth of rain into the last 10 days,” he explained.
Stiles added that the dry start to the month was a catalyst to flooding.
“We went through two-thirds of the month with very little rainfall. When you do get these heavy rains, the ground is so hard that a lot of water runs off over the top of it, right into the storm drains and then that continues to back things up,” he said.
CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor said Toronto received 100 millimetres of rain in July — measured at Pearson International Airport. Most of the rain came after July 21.
The average rainfall for July at Pearson is 74.4 millimetres.
For those hoping for a cooler August, Environment Canada is calling for something similar to July, with a little less rain.
