Anxiety or depression can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke

Low level stress can raise the risk of fatal heart attacks and stroke.

Scottish scientists say people with anxiety or depression have a 20 per cent increased risk of death.

Dr. Tom Russ, of  the University of Edinburgh, says people with low distress levels — about a quarter of the adult population — are unlikely to come to the attention of mental health services because they may not even be getting treatment.

The study is published online in the British Medical Journal.
