TORONTO, Ont. – There were hugs, tears and sadness, as friends, families and even complete strangers gathered to mourn the loss of 14-year-old Shyanne Charles.
Mourners at the funeral for Charles, who was killed when at least two gunmen opened fire at a Danzig Street community barbecue, dressed in white to remember the innocence of the young girl.
It was at the family’s request that mourners wore white and made the day a celebration of her life.
“She is in a better place, so relax, no negativity today,” said her grandfather.
The funeral service was held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Home, near Warden and Sheppard Avenues.
Hundreds of people attended a visitation for Charles held Friday night at the same funeral home.
Charles, who had just graduated from Grade 8, was a straight-A student who worked at a sports program for at-risk youth.
Also killed was 23-year-old Joshua Yasay, who had just graduated from York University. A funeral service for Yasay was held in Ajax on Monday.
