Reigning Olympic champion Park Tae-Hwan was disqualified from the 400-metre freestyle heats on Saturday morning, putting Canadian Ryan Cochrane in position to qualify for the final.
Park, of Korea, was eliminated for leaving the blocks early. Although his times were not released, it is likely that the disqualification allowed Cochrane, of Victoria, B.C., to qualify for his first 400m freestyle Olympic final. He posted the eighth-fastest time of the day.
