A scholarship fund has been set up in the name of the woman killed in the Colorado shooting that had a connection to Toronto.
Jessica Ghawi, 24, was killed on July 20 as she watched the new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises,” at a theatre in a Denver suburb.
Toronto junior hockey player Jay Meloff said his girlfriend, Ghawi, narrowly escaped the deadly shooting at the Eaton Centre in June. She was in town visiting him at that time.
Meloff said he last spoke with Ghawi right before she went into the movie theatre Thursday night. She was at the theatre with a longtime friend, who was injured in the shooting.
Ghawi had written on her blog on June 5 that she was eating inside of the Eaton Centre food court when an “odd feeling” made her walk out of the shopping mall just minutes before shots rang out.
Local media reported that Ghawi, had moved from San Antonio to Denver to pursue her dream of becoming a TV sportscaster, who went by the name Jessica Redfield.
Shortly after the shooting, Ghawi’s brother Jordan tweeted “this could easily be the worst night of my life.”
Now, her brother has set up a sports journalism scholarship fund to help put students through university. Click here for more info.
