TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Police Services Board wants officials in Ottawa to create laws that would leave stolen cellphones useless.
The board passed a motion Thursday, calling on the federal government to force cellphone providers to create technology that shuts down stolen phones.
The board also suggested that Ottawa creates a national registry for phones so that any phone reported stolen can’t be reactivated.
The number of cellphone robberies in Toronto has doubled over the past three years to approximately 1,800.
