BARRIE – The residents of several homes in a Barrie neighbourhood are being evacuated again after spending only one night at home.

Barrie police say investigators have uncovered more chemicals at a home on Virgilwood Crescent where two men were arrested last week in connection to a decades-old murder.

“Investigation of those chemicals has today lead us to ask the immediate four next door neighbours to leave for the day and three other residents to shelter in place. This will provide room for the officers to work, to deal with the additional materials.”

Const. Angela Butler said investigators found the chemicals after getting a tip from one of the two men who had been living in the house that teams of police who spent a week scouring the residence had missed something.

“There was something hidden that was not obvious to the officers,” she said.

She added the new information led police to a “grouping of chemicals” stuck behind a panel in the basement.

Nearly 60 residents were forced out of their homes last week as police cleared explosives and chemicals from the home.

Firearms and ammunition were also found during the police search.
