TORONTO, Ont. – A chunk of concrete fell off the Gardiner Expressway onto Bathurst Street, Wednesday, shattering into several pieces.

It happened at around 4:30 a.m. No one was injured in the incident and no vehicles were hit.

John Bryson, manager of structures and expressways for the City of Toronto, said it was likely the extreme heat and humidity that caused the concrete to fall.

“My feeling is the high temperature and high humidity may have caused more movement in the high beam,” Bryson said.

He believes it was a single chunk of concrete — around a foot long and two inches thick — that fell and shattered into several pieces when it hit the road.

City crews used to scissor lift to see where the chunk of concrete came loose from the Gardiner.

Bathurst Street has reopened and the TTC said regular service has resumed for its Bathurst streetcars.

There are no 511 Bathurst streetcars running between the Queen and Exhibition, and shuttle buses running. Also, streetcars on the 509 Harbourfront route have been replaced by buses. At Union station, passengers can board the buses at Bay and Front streets.

This latest incident marked the fifth time since May that chunks of concrete have fallen from the underside of the Gardiner.
